South Birmingham residents invited to doorstep VE Day celebration

This year is the 75th anniversary of VE Day – a day which marked the beginning of the end of World War II. On 8th May 1945, people celebrated with huge street street parties across the UK.

Many communities were planning large events from street parties to community picnics – a chance for people to come together.

However, with the current coronavirus outbreak meaning a restriction on social gatherings, doorstep and garden events are being planned across the country.

South Birmingham is no different and Northfield Community Partnership (NCP) and Northfield Neighbourhood Network Scheme (NNNS) are inviting residents to take part in a special Picnic on your Porch event at 2pm on Friday 8th May 2020.

The event encourages residents to join in creative celebrations while adhering to social distancing guidelines! People are invited to have a picnic on their porch, doorstep or driveway; dress in vintage clothing; decorate their homes with bunting, flags and posters; enjoy nostalgic music and singing as a street; play games from the era; or entertain their neighbours, if they have a talent!

Rebecca Debenham Chief Executive Officer of NCP said: “In a time where we feel so far apart from our family loved ones and friends, it is more important than ever that we all find ways to come together as a community and support one another.”

“We  are asking people to get involved by decorating your house, picnicking on your porch, dressing in vintage clothes or having vintage afternoon tea.”

Organisers are arranging to provide resources such as ideas for decorating homes, ideas for old school games, cake toppers and more.

They are also working with local musicians and entertainers to bring live entertainment to local streets and if you can help, please let them know!

Rebecca added: “The Northfield Neighbourhood Network Scheme is sponsoring this event as part of their  role in bringing the community together to support community assets, and during this crisis it has really highlighted how important community is!”

If you would like a VE Day activity pack, need more information or if you are a musician or entertainer or can help in any other way, please email Lois on Lois@northfieldcommunity.org
